THE SWEET FLAVOR OF CONTROL IN THE SUGAR MILLS OF COLOMBIA

For several years, we have been able to establish the difficulties that sugar mill entrepreneurs face in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, one of the regions with the highest sugar cane production. According to records of producer associations, on average, 80% of the 2.4 million tons of sugar produced annually in Colombia comes from this region.
With mechanized work to achieve the production and transformation of this agroindustry, the needs are multiple. “The sector in general suffers from a scourge of uncontrolled fuel losses. There is also a non-optimal use of their fleets,” explains William Sanclemente, an experienced executive and expert in the difficulties of the Valle del Cauca sugar mills.
Based on this knowledge, mill entrepreneurs have been able to verify that the solution to these challenges is Control IMS technology. “Our tool has allowed continuous improvements in indicators to control the operating costs of the fleets used to transport cane,” Sanclemente acknowledges.
In February 2024, Control IMS visited one of the largest mills in Valle del Cauca that has our technology. The results are very positive, especially in the productivity of the machine. “The results give us an improvement of up to 20% for each type of machine that is operating within the mill,” revealed, at the end of the visit, our Business Development Director, Carlos Aristizabal.
But how does Control IMS achieve this efficiency that represents million-dollar savings for business owners? Thanks to the equipment and technology that Control IMS is using, “productivity is monitored, versus consumption/kilometer or consumption/ton traveled. This is a very good experience for every company in the sugar industry so they can enter the Control IMS projects, place their technologies, and generate recoveries in terms of operating costs.”
Progress is also achieved, thanks to the integrated Control IMS platform: “Integrated means that we can, under the same platform, manage fuel consumption in vehicles and, in addition, how those vehicles operate, and how they spend the fuel they use. We put those on vehicles. In addition to how much time they spend on each operation, they carry out the different harvest or field activities of the sugar mills.”
Thus, the sugarcane agroindustry is also strengthened with Control IMS technology. A clear example of how investments in automation for fuel management generate savings and efficiency in this competitive industry.
